Shuhei Yoshida: PSN expansion to PSP is planned

17 Jul 2008

Filed under:

Joystiq and PS Fanboy interviewed Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida about a number of hot topics earlier this week. However, one of the big talking points had to be the expansion of the PLAYSTATION Network beyond the PS3. Currently, home console owners can sign in using a single PSN ID, and can access a Friends list, send messages to friends, and play games together online.During the E3 keynote, Sony briefly noted that they wanted to expand the PSN's "universal ID," and we asked Yoshida if that expansion could hit the PSP. We asked if using the same PSN ID from the PS3 can access a universal Friends list on the PSP. His response? "That's the plan."Already, implementing the PLAYSTATION Store directly on the PSP is in the works. It won't be too long before we see even more features of the PS3 popping up on the PSP: Friends lists, messaging and who knows what else ... trophies, perhaps? Stay tuned in the coming days for the full itnerview.

E3: LocoRoco 2 screens

17 Jul 2008

via Computer and Video Games

We loved the original LocoRoco and the sequel looks like it'll be more of the same. Fine by us

Sony is yet to offer even a rough release date for the title, but considering it'll probably use the same assets and physics, we can't see it taking too long to arrive.

With Sony's new emphasis on download content, maybe it'll release on PSN this time around (like the not-so-great LocoRoco Cocoreccho on PS3).

Tretton: Digitally distributed movies will determine fate of UMD

17 Jul 2008

via Games Industry

At an E3 2008 roundtable, SCEA CEO Jack Tretton admitted that the company has had trouble establishing the UMD as a movie format.

"I think the UMD has struggled," he said, as reported by Kotaku. "And that's an understatement. That's been a very frustrating thing. I don't think [UMD movies] were handled very effectively."

He said it seemed as if the studios said "let's see if we can get people to pay USD 20 or 30 for crappy movies with less content."

Tretton noted that Sony was considering a PSP model with a harddrive or larger built-in memory, which he viewed as the trend going forward.

Yesterday, Sony's video download service for the PS3 and PSP went live. Tretton acknowledged that digital downloads will determine the fate of the UMD as a movie format, saying that they would either supplement the UMD's struggle or be the "stake in the UMD's heart."...

Sony 'considering' a PSP with a hard drive

17 Jul 2008

According to internet rumors Sony is considering a PSP with a hard drive. Jack Tretton reportedly said that \"with the recently announced ability to purchase movies on a Playstation 3 and move them over to a Playstation Portable, and as the cost of memory continues to drop, the chance that a new Playstation Portable would include some sort of internal storage option is becoming increasingly likely.\"...

No, Valkyria Chronicles Isn't Coming To PSP

17 Jul 2008

via Kotaku

When Sony showed off Sega's Valkyria Chronicles as part of its upcoming PSP line-up, alongside titles like Resistance: Retribution and LocoRoco 2, we thought.... "Wait. Valkyria Chronicles? For the PSP?!" It was, inarguably, the best looking PSP game on display.

The reason for that is that Valkyria Chronicles is a PlayStation 3 title. Chalk its appearance at Sony's E3 media briefing up to a massive blunder on Sony's part. Sega president Simon Jeffery sounded none too pleased about the flub when we talked to him earlier today and hinted that Sony was on the receiving of serious tongue-lashing from the publisher. Oops!...

Star Ocean's first English screenshots depart

Filed under:

So we posted a trailer for Star Ocean: First Departure the other day, and today we have the very first screenshots of the English version of the game. It's not a huge gallery brimming to the top with screenies, but it's better than nothing. We've got four pics: two showing off that nice widescreen format in battle and the other two are from the fully-voiced anime cut scenes.Gallery: Star Ocean: The First Departure

E3: First Stardust PSP screens

17 Jul 2008

via Computer and Video Games

We've been playing Stardust HD more recently thanks to it being the only game that lets us kick off our Trophy collection on PS3, so it was a pleasant surprise to see it coming to PSP.

There's not a great deal going on in these screens - Sony's screenshot man must have given up the fight after all this E3 madness - but the brief glimpse we got of Super Stardust Portable at Sony's press conference looked promising.

Sony is yet to reveal whether it'll be a download title like its PS3 brother, or sold on UMD.

How well, or badly, will the dual analogue control system convert to the analogue stub and little face buttons of the PSP, though?

Sony CEO blames piracy for low software sales

17 Jul 2008

Filed under:

Jack Tretton spoke with us at a blogger's roundtable earlier today. When questioned about why software sales are so sluggish in comparison to the stellar hardware sales, Tretton noted that there were three big reasons: 1 - The multimedia features of the PSP may encourage users to play less games, watch more movies and listen to music. 2 - Gamers don't want water-downed PS2 ports; they want original games. 3 - Piracy.Tretton told us that "we have been able to track with releases like God of War that hundreds of thousands of units in potential sales are walking out the door through piracy on day one. We knew exactly that only a few months ago. Unforutnately, there isn't much to do for pirates that are already getting their way. Millions of systems are already out there .. but there are "remedies" coming down the line. Perhaps a growing library of DRM-enabled downloadable titles will help Sony's cause. But for now, the situation looks rather bleak.
