Producer takes us through the PSP version of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

Download to PSP
LucasArts has always been a strong supporter of the PSP, and the effort they're placing into the upcoming PSP version really shows. Anyone who's played the PS3 demo will find this level awfully familiar: it looks like the PSP version makes no significant sacrifices. Physics, destructible environments, and large hordes of enemies are all present in the PSP version. In fact, there's exclusive content on the PSP version you won't even find on the consoles. How's that for love?

Sony Boosts PSP Networking Capabilities

3 Sep 2008

PSP will be seeing some major updates to its networking capabilities later this year. Sony Japan offered preliminary details today on what players can expect from future firmware updates.

This Fall, PSP will gain direct access to the PlayStation Store. This long promised feature will allow for PSP users to download demos and more directly to the portable without having to go through the PS3 or PC.

In Japan, Sony will commemorate the new PS Store-friendly PSP with the release of Mainichi Issyo Portable. The PS3 version of the Japan-only title is available as a free download, with Sony charging for items and gameplay modes that are added every month.

Perhaps more significant than both these developments, Sony will be offering PSP players some new connectivity options thanks to a new service that further ties the portable with the PS3. This Fall, select PSP titles will allow players to go through the PS3 to take their ad-hoc multiplayer modes online. When playing in this fashion, the PS3 can be used for text and chat messaging and also for matching.

Currently, Sony has confirmed that Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G will be compatible with this new service. In Japan, this is big news, as that title has sold over 2.4 million units.

Other titles, as well as further details on the service, will be announced in the near future.

Both these features will be compatible with all models of the PSP, from the original up to the new PSP-3000.

The new PSP 3000 - Is it time to upgrade your hand-held?

3 Sep 2008

With sales consistently lagging behind its main competitor in the hand-held market, the Nintendo DS, Sony hopes to catch the eye of those hand-held gamers who have yet to experience its Playstation Portable, by releasing an upgraded model this October.

Along with some wide-eyed new customers, Sony hope that the new added features will be enough to tempt PSP Slim and Lite owners- and certainly early adopters who bought the initial hand-held back in 2005 - to upgrade to the PSP 3000.

Currently, Game and Gamestation are offering trade-in prices of approximately *£50 for the PSP base model and £60 for the PSP Slim and Lite. Therefore, if you're thinking of trading in, you'll be able to pick up the PSP 3000, which will retail at £150, for approximately £100 and £90 respectively on its launch. That's if you trade-in now though say both Game and Gamestation who have told us that they firmly expect trade-in prices to drop over the next month as gamers throw out the old and get ready for the new.

But, Is it actually going to worth upgrading? Well, the PSP 3000 offers very few new features, but its jewel in the crown is the new look LCD screen.

Usually, a slight upscale in visual quality wouldn't be enough to convince us to upgrade but, providing the image below (showing the comparison between a Slim & Lite and a PSP 3000) hasn't been altered by hand, then there really does seem to be an incredible difference between the two models. Of course, it's hard to tell just how good the difference is until you have both the PSP Slim & Lite models in your hands, but first impressions suggest that the "higher contrast ratio, shorter response time, and wide colour gamut" that Sony say it will boast, will significantly improve the visual quality of games and movies. Furthermore, the PSP 300 will have an anti-glare function to make gaming easier under different lighting conditions.

The improved LCD screen is going to come at a price though. Reports, originating from Gamespot, reveal that the new screen will draw more power from the battery making overall battery life diminish by approximately 20-30 minutes. It's certainly an inconvenience, but Sony's John Koller believes:

"That's going to be off-set because we're still going to have the extended life battery that's still available for the consumers, so they're still going to get the 8 to 10 hours out of that battery. Or the battery that comes with the PSP will now be right around three and a half to four hours."

Even though the poorer battery performance doesn't worry us, the unique selling point of the PSP 3000's upgraded screen just isn't enough to tempt us to upgrade, especially when you take into account that the quality of the PSP 2001 screen is still very good. For us, the hand-held is still first and foremost about the games more than anything else, so although the improved LCD screen undoubtedly looks better, it isn't enough on its own to warrant us shelling out 100 notes.

PSP-1000 Pandora Battery

3 Sep 2008

New from SuccessHK

This PSP-1000 Pandora Battery allows you to put the PSP into service mode so that you are able to recover a PSP from a bad flash or downgrade your firmware. The PSP Pandora battery is by far the easiest way to recover your PSP console from a bad flash as well as downgrading. Until now you would need to install chips like the PSP U.P to recover a bad flash, not anymore using the PSP Pandora Battery. The Pandora Battery is a bulk pack, and it is easy to use: simply insert the magic memory stick into your PSP, then insert the Pandora Battery and follow the simple on-screen instructions. The instructions are also included with the Pandora Battery.

It is for your PSP-1000 only, and will fix it 100%.

Prinny: Ore ga Shujinko de Iinsu ka?

3 Sep 2008

There's an official site for Prinny: Ore ga Shujinko de Iinsu ka? - the new prinny game for PSP. It's not a lemmings-style game as I'd previously postulated, but seems to be more of a side-scrolling 2.5D action game. You can see some screens on this sell-sheet (PDF), and a bit of the action on the official site. The title basically means "Prinny - Is it ok for me to be the protagonist?" The site opens in full on the 5th, so anticipate more info!

PictoImage Proves DS will Never Replace Party Games

2 Sep 2008

As I watch the trailer for PictoImage, I can’t help but get the feeling that “this is lame”. Now I’m going to stress that this is just from watching the trailer. I have yet to review the game, and I probably never will.

The concept is sound. Utilize the DS touchpad and wifi experience to create a party game for up to 8 players off one cartridge. Then everyone sits down and plays a micro version of “Pictionary”?

I’m sorry. I just can’t see this happening with anyone over the age of 13. You may gain some new features by using fancy gadgets and software, but you simply can’t replace the classic. You lose out on the gestures, the interactions, the competitiveness, the foul language, the speed drawing, the pointing at the board and grunting “uh” hoping your team understands you, and all the other joys that you get from the classic group game. Sit everyone down, have them concentrate on a two 3-inch LCD squares, and see if the formula still works. I doubt it will.

The only reason I blog about this is because I decided to look at what is coming down the pipeline for new DS games. There’s some great looking games that are a month or two away still, but this week I’d say go blow your weekly DS budget on Apple applications. Unless you have a pre-teen daughter, then by all means go grab PictoImage for her and all her friends.

Chickey Chick

2 Sep 2008

News via Scenerybeta 2008

Chickey Chick is a great game funny and entertaining. Manage a sympathetic chick by the different levels of the game. The goal: cleaning up the level of enemies using eggs as a weapon. This Homebrew is scheduled in LUA, and participates in the Beta Scenery 2008 with exclusive content for the contest, as a level editor. 100% recommended, entertaining until the last corner of the game.

Author: DrWho198.

Chickey Chick is a platform game in which we must move forward by the various levels. We will have to climb stairs and others to get the eggs that appear randomly. Once an egg lame, we can launch against one of the multiple enemies, but beware! Picks up the eggs before they hatch, or you'll see a dragon that spits fire in the mouth!

We may also jump on enemies to let them "stunning" for a few seconds. By eliminating an enemy, which receives a regalito redeemed for points. By jumping on the enemy, receive 10 dots. Finally, when we've cleared the level of enemies, will open the door and fly towards her to go to the next level. If you open the door to the screen were eggs, these will become golden eggs, give you hurry and catch before flying toward the door!

Description: The author mentions that this clearly inspired by the game New Zealand Story, which appeared in 1988 the company Taito.

Controls:

Pad Digital / Analog: Moving around the screen.

Pad Digital / Analog Up / Down: Upload / Download stairs.

X: Jump.

O: Open egg (previously caught).

I have been pleasantly surprised by the details so designed, and which includes background music.

Improvements version 0.7sb Fixed

Corrected error after 10 minutes of play, thanks to a arkanist report.
