Solved: PSP 3000 Scan Lines Are 100% Hardware Based

1 Nov 2008

Nobody knew if it was the software or the hardware. Why was the PSP 3000, Sony's supposed best to date with an incredible screen, suffering from interlaced images? Logic Sunrise put both displays under a 40X microscope and saw the problem immediately. Can you tell the difference? Take a mental guess and then check if you're smarter than a Sony engineer:

PSP-3000 proving to be difficult for hackers to crack

1 Nov 2008

The PSP has proven to be quite the popular system among hackers and modders of all sorts, but it looks like Sony has turned the tables a bit with its latest PSP-3000 model (otherwise known as the PSP Brite), which has so far put up a stiff resistance against folks' attempts to put it to some decidedly unofficial uses. Among other things, the PSP-3000 has apparently completely shut shutting down the popular Pandora battery hack, and it's even managed to stifle new attempts by heavyweight modders like Dark Alex to crack it open. One modder, known only as Royginald, even went so far as to swap the PSP-3000's CPU out in favor of one from a PSP-2000, only to discover far too late that the 3000's new interlaced video made the entire setup quite useless. Maybe that's one of the "features" Sony was talking about?

PSP-3000 put under microscope, interlacing issue exposed

1 Nov 2008

via Engadget

You know those complaints about the ugly, old-school looking interlacing lines that many (ourselves included) have reported seeing on the new PSP-3000? The specific issue has been uncovered -- but not by Sony. A group of concerned French gamers with a 40x microscope think it all comes down to that most mellow of colors: blue. LCDs are comprised of RGB pixels that, combined, form all the rainbow of hues in between.

As you can see in the picture above, the PSP-2000's LCD (left) used pixels in a vertical orientation, and the blue pixels were fairly light in color. On the PSP-3000 (right), the pixels are now arranged horizontally, and the blue ones are far darker than before. The dark horizontal lines result in the heinous interlacing, an effect that any Command & Conquer player will tell you wasn't even cool in the 90's. Sony's already called this a "feature" and not a flaw, so if you absolutely must buy a PSP this holiday season the folks at Logic-Sunrise who took the above pics recommend you buy an older 2000-series -- while you still can....

[RELEASE] Easy Spoof for 5.00 M33-3

1 Nov 2008

Easy Spoof V.1 BETA

ONLY for 5.00 M33-3

Easy Spoof is a simple tool that allows you to spoof your firmware version.

Just to be clear what this does: It does NOT actually change your firmware, just the firmware version display in the XMB, under "System Settings/System Information".

NOTE: You must install Easy Spoof to the GAME5XX folder, or it will refuse to start ;)

This is BETA V.1 - I will probably update in the future to allow more than 8 characters to be used in firmware spoofs.

Much thanks to Super Sheep & Matchung who made writing this a million times easier... SONY has now dynamically stored 2 characters in the firmware string within vshctrl.prx, which had me a little confused when i first began to write this... THANKS GUYS !! :D...

Microscopic look at PSP-3000 reveals reasons behind interlacing

31 Oct 2008

Filed under:

Logic Sunrise took a microscope to both the PSP-2000 and 3000 to see why the 3000 has interlacing issues. At 40X magnification, it's clear that the two screens have very different pixels. Can you see what some of the major differences are?The 3000 series has pixels aligned horizontally, not vertically. In addition, the blues of the 3000 are much darker. These two in tandem may be behind the interlacing "feature" of the 3000 screen.[Via Gizmodo]

PSP 3000 screen issues investigated, its all about the poor pixels

31 Oct 2008

Logic-Sunrise has got in touch to let us know about the results of their investigation into the screen issues with the latest edition PSPs. They took out a microscope in order to test the difference between the screens and noted this - \" the biggest issue is the blue part of the pixel is not \"light\", but very dark, near black ... The issue is that the blue part is horizon aligned, not vertical aligned, like old screens. It\'s why we have a scanline effect.\" They also contacted Sony who told them no new console will have a different screen and essentially LS recommend you stay away from the new PSP system as its not very pleasant to play on....

PSP mod allows the use of a SNES controller

31 Oct 2008

Filed under:

Once upon a time there was a girl who had limited use of one of her hands. Not to worry, she is still able to game after mastering the use of a Super Nintendo controller. However, she also enjoys the PSP but is understandably reluctant to learn how to play it with one hand. What's a gal to do?Fortunately, a clever bloke was commissioned to create a mod for her so she can use the SNES controller to play games on her PSP. Here's how it happened: he added a small socket originally intended for a cell phone, put together a custom cable and plug for the socket, then wired it to be used with the vintage controller. The mod even acts as a stand and keeps the PSP at an angle. A video of this in action, after the break:[Via Engadget]Continue reading PSP mod allows the use of a SNES controller

European PSN update for October 30th

31 Oct 2008

Filed under:

Today's PSN update could be better and it could be worse. Just be happy Sony have seen fit to update the store two weeks in a row. Who knows, maybe we'll see an update every week. Was that a pig that just flew past my window? Anyway, two full games are available to grab today, along with the Loco Roco 2 TGS trailer, which is definitely worth a download. Here's the release list in handy-dandy bullet point form.

  • Def Jam Fight For NY: The Takeover full game (£15.99/€19.99)
  • Cool Boarders 2 full PS1 game (£3.99/€4.99)
  • Loco Roco 2 TGS trailer (free)

PSP Brite is impervious to hackers

31 Oct 2008

Filed under:

Sony's latest hardware revision, the PSP-3000 aka PSP Brite, is doing well in standing up against pirates, hackers and their tools. According to PSP World, previous exploits which allow access to kernel memory and firmware are now patched up -- no way getting in there now. Infamous hackers like Dark Alex have yet to find a way through the PSP Brite's new specs. Other hackers are getting frustrated; take Royginald from the Philippines who has swapped in the PSP Slim's CPU into a PSP Brite while keeping the screen and case intact. All that to run custom firmware and homebrew which doesn't even run properly because of signal output differences. We wonder if Sony has finally found a solution to its custom firmware woes.

Imageepoch Working On A PSP Game?

31 Oct 2008

Imageepoch, the developers of Luminous Arc 2 and Arc Rise Fantasia, have pretty much stuck with Nintendo hardware. Those games are coming out for the Nintendo DS and Wii respectively. In the future Imageepoch may start working with other platforms. Ryoei Mikage, President of Imageepoch, told us ?Next year or next, next year there might be a really cool action PSP game.? That?s interesting because Imageepoch is currently dabbling in the action genre too.

Europe gets LocoRoco 2 and Buzz! Brain Bender in November

31 Oct 2008

Filed under:

The semi-official PlayStation blog ThreeSpeech has let out a list of Sony Europe's first party titles scheduled for release in November. Apparently, both LocoRoco 2 and Buzz! Brain Bender are SCEE's PSP offerings for the month; however, their respective dates come with an attached to-be-confirmed note -- so things could change. LocoRoco 2 is slated for November 21, while the new Buzz! game is set a week later on the 28th. November 21 is a rather early date for LocoRoco 2 considering that Japan will be getting the title on December 4. We suppose Europeans love the smug-looking blobs more than they do in Asia. Meanwhile, North America will still have to settle with 2009 for a release date.
